Panasonic Viera TX-L32D28 LED TV

Given the enormous vested interest Panasonic has in its beloved plasma technology, it is hardly surprising that the company has been quite overdue in getting involved in the LED scene. However, now Panasonic is very keen to prove that it can manufacture LED LCD TVs as well as the next manufacturer. This year, this Japanese company had finally bitten the LED bullet, plumping for the edge mounted LED approach for its debut display and released the 32 inch, 1080p Viera TX-L32D28. The good news here is that, as the LED illuminated LCD TVs can offer more contrast than the traditional CCFL LCD sets. However, the downside is that, Panasonic has put on a £1,000 price tag for this TV. Taking into consideration the fact that you can get a 37” TV with the standard backlight for this price tag, or you might even be able to place your hands on a 42” plasma set, the TX-L32D28 will seem to be rather expensive.

The Viera TX-L32D28 is quite a distinctive LED TV, not just with the looks, but also in its utterly comprehensive feature count. There is simply very little the TX-L32D28 cannot do. The flatscreen TV market is simply dominated by the bargain basement prices and indistinguishable gloss black designs, but is there any room for a no expense spared purple LED TV?

Design:

A non black TV: Yepee!

The TV designs are really boring. In the late eighties, TVs were made of black plastic and in the nineties, they were all made of silver plastic. When flat-panel TVs arrived in the middle of the last decade, everyone went bonkers for shiny black plastic. Now it seems we are just heading back towards silver. Ok, we will stop beating around the bush, this TV is not black. Well, so what colour is it? The bezel seems to be very light silver, but it is so light that it looks almost white. The rest of the box is a more of the traditional silver colour, as is the remote control. Does any of this matter? No, not really, but, while we think this TV will look totally awesome in your bedroom, we are not so sure it is well-suited to every living room. If you are a bit cool and funky, you can get one of these in purple and white too.

Sleek:

Panasonic Viera TX-L32D28 LED TV is not big and fat; it has a pleasingly thin body, and it is lightweight too. We found that the stand accounts for the majority of the weight, so the TV does not blow over when you sneeze. For starters, the really heavy, metal desktop stand it ships with is designed so that you can slide the TV right down its neck, leaving the TV sitting almost flush with the table. The stand also tilts the screen back slightly, for a more comfortable viewing angle. The problem is that TVs with LED edge lights are usually wafer-thin, and the TX-L32D28 is not that sleek. While the TX-L32D28’s “Size 10” does not affect its operation, Panasonic would probably sell more units if it were really thin. After all, market research tells that we, the consumers, care more about size and style than most other features. One final plus point to mention is that the L32D28’s viewing angle seems slightly more forgiving than most LCD TVs. It’s still no match for a plasma screen, with greyness settling over blacks and other colours losing saturation from around 45 degrees and more. But this compares favourably with the mere 20-30 degrees of angle achievable with many LCD TVs, and the level of the drop off in colour, in particular, doesn’t seem as severe.

Slots, Ports and Connectivity:

The TX-L32D28 LED edge Backlit LCD TV has a haul of ins and outs to pose a challenge any top specification display. In the side panel, you will find slots for HDMI, USB and SD cards, while the rear adds three more HDMI, another USB, and a host of other audio and video ins and outs that excludes only S-video. While that might sound like one USB too many, with an optional Wi-Fi dongle and a webcam, which is no less for Skype video calls on the horizon, there may not be much room for any of your memory sticks. The Ethernet also does a cast, which powers the LED TV’s DLNA networking and also its Viera Cast portal, while the TX-L32D28 HD LCD LED TV also doubles as a recorder. The television manufacturers have long kept clear of the built-in hard drives because of the worries about faults and returns, so it is really nice to know that the 32” D28BP can record to an external hard drive of up to 2TB in size.

User Interface:

EPG:

The cluttered and clunky remote’s Guide button brings up the EPG for either the Freesat or Freeview tuners, though it kills dead both the audio and picture of the channel you are watching. And, it is totally a squashed affair as the schedules for seven channels over two hours are shown, but too much of the screen real estate, well over half is taken up by a Viera logo where there should be a thumbnail of a live TV channel and an empty grey background. Using the EPG is fairly comfortable, with searching done by the fastext buttons and also by genre.

Picture Menu:

Unusually, both simple (contrast, brightness etc) and ISF-certified complex (RGB gain, cut-off and gamma levels) picture calibration choices are found in the picture menus. Your changes can be assigned to one of two ‘Professional’ gaps in the picture preset roster, though they can also be long-winded to activate while watching TV. Peculiarly, the TV’s headline Intelligent Frame Creation feature which can be set to mid, max, or switched off, and the Resolution Enhancer are hidden away in ‘other settings’. This is typical of the TX-L32D28BP’s illogical interface, which contains a lot of quirks and hidden features, with settings that should be easily accessible discovered only by accident. Other more basic adjustments include a vivid colour processor, a multi-level noise reduction tool, and no less than eight unusually well-considered picture presets. These include a Game mode, a Photo mode (more brands should include one of these), and two ‘Professional’ modes intended for ISF use.

Overall, the interface is sharp, quick and customisable, allowing users to remove widgets, which is probably a very good idea. Another improvement on this model is that Viera Cast now joins-up with either of the built-in TV tuners; a small window in the middle of the Viera Cast home page plays the current TV channel.

Features:

Though the Freeview HD may be all the rage, the TX-L32D28 32-inch LED TV has also added the Freesat HD, along with its broadband entertainment portal, of course, the Viera Cast. The Viera Cast now includes widgets for Eurosport and Daily Motion news clips, though YouTube remains the highlight. Skype, meanwhile, has been advertised as ‘coming soon’.

Freeview HD and Freesat HD:

Panasonic offers a great selection of options for receiving programmes. As we had just mentioned, there is both standard Freeview tuner, as you’d expect, and a Freeview HD tuner too.  Hence, if you live in a region that has access to Freeview HD, you will be able to get three HD channels over the air for free. They include, BBC HD, ITV1 HD and 4HD all broadcast various amounts of HD material throughout the day. ITV and Channel 4 also use their HD channels to upscale standard-definition content too, which is a good way of getting better Freeview picture quality. If you are not lucky enough to live in an area served by Freeview HD, then you can, instead, use the freesat HD tuner to get BBC HD and ITV1 HD via satellite. You will also get a selection of SD channels too, which is good news if you are a telly addict. Panasonic keeps the tuners for Freeview HD and freesat HD separate, so you will have to switch between them to see what is on through the electronic programme guide. You can, however, do this with a simple press of the ‘TV’ button.

Skype:

The Skype feature on the TV will be available quite soon and when it is, you will be able to buy a USB camera from the Skype store and connect it to your TV, enabling video chats with distant friends and family.

Viera Cast:

Viera Cast remains to be one of the deluxe broadband entertainment portals around, but now in design terms only. Obviously, these platforms are for streaming content from the web, which simply means films and on-demand TV, but the Panasonic TX-L32D28BP can offer only short videos from YouTube, Daily Motion and Eurosport. Samsung and Sony are both adding BBC iPlayer and LoveFilm to their online services. We hope Panasonic does the same soon, as these features are real draws for people looking to get more out of their TV. A total of ten widgets are now available and have been laid out in an excellent manner, and though we doubt Bloomberg, Czech entertainment site nova.cz or German news services Bild.de and Tagesschau will have wide appeal, there is also an English language service available on the German owned QTom music streaming widget. Unfortunately all that you get is an ‘Error: bad content’ message when QTom is tried to be loaded, which does not bode well. Honestly, we would have been really glad if Viera Cast contained any genuinely engaging content.

The Edge LED:

We were really pleased that Panasonic has turned its undoubted engineering know-how to LED technology, but the TX-L32D28BP’s embracing of Edge LED is technically something of an excuse. Since the ‘Local dimming’, as found on high end Full LED TVs is impossible and as a result, the TX-L32D28BP suffers from troublesome some contrast. Although it is hardly as deal breaker, the detail within dark areas of images takes on a ‘black hole’ look, though we did notice some light seepage from a portion of the bottom of the screen. Contrast is not up to the mark with the much cheaper plasmas from the same brand’s stable, and it leaves us wondering why Panasonic has not thought about manufacturing 32” plasmas. However, the Viera D28 LED still manages a relatively wide contrast spectrum that sees both muted and bright footage dealt well, with the former boasting splendidly scorching colours.

True Cinema and Intelligent Frame Creation Pro:

The Panasonic Viera TX-L32D28 TV is also equipped with the True Cinema, which is a new picture preset for Panasonic that puts its LED lights on low and movies on Blu-ray sparkle, though it’s more basic Cinema setting looks better with blacks. With little picture processing going on inside, a clean and highly detailed image emerges that has got stacks of depth. It is true that the TX-L32D28BP can struggle with is motion especially on camera pans, but be careful if using the ‘cure’, its Intelligent Frame Creation Pro feature. This feature has been included to literally smooth over LCD tech’s traditional problem with blur when showing video, IFC Pro inserts guessed at frames of video into the action to create a moving image that is supremely fluid. Panasonic has not managed to escape from the fizzying artefacts that appear around moving objects, such as character’s heads. This can be quite distracting, and so, if you wish to give the IFC Pro a go, make sure that you leave it on its ‘mid’ setting for the lesser messy results.

Resolution Enhancer:

The DVD pictures have been given a helping hand by the Resolution Enhancer, which is again available in two flavours. Standard-def TV channels from Freeview and Freesat, however, they struggle to convince and are wrecked by a great deal of digital noise and overt softness, despite the Resolution Enhancer working overtime.

Media Player Software:

The Media Player software that allows recording, but this feature is applicable only for the channel you are watching, and even then, only for two hours, so, it is rather basic. It also has the ability to record high definition channels from either Freeview or Freesat. The Media Player is restricted to hard drives of 160GB and above, hence, there is simply no chance of recording a single show to a memory stick for taking elsewhere. When you go deep into the main menu of TX-L32D28BP, you can change the maximum recording time to 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 minutes, and even set-up a pause and rewind live TV feature. Once that is done, the external drive you have connected must be formatted and named, with Panasonic making it clear that you can only playback any recordings on this TV. You will be able to register eight hard drives at a time, but can use only one at a time, despite the TV having two USB slots. In practice, only certain brands of hard drive are compatible with this system, it seems, and sadly the popular Western Digital MyBook is not one of those; though the TV manages to format and validate is, it does not manage to make any recordings.

Digital Media Playback:

The same kind of Media Player software also governs playback of digital media from a USB stick or SD card. There is a shortcut button that accesses the SD card straight from the remote, even though it actually leads to a menu from where you must choose between icons for the USB and SD card slots. Choose ‘SD’, then ‘photos’, and the TX-L32D28BP puts on some lounge jazz piano sounds while it strolls through your JPEGs; choose music, and tunes are played from MP3 files in front of 3D wallpaper. However, the screen can be switched off in the TV’s main menus if you want to use less power. You get to choose the videos, however, and only DivX and AVC HD files can be played and not DivX HD, as advertised for this TV. That is certain a worry, though the rather rudimentary software at least displays previews of the video files you hover over, with sound, too. Activate the USB slot and a similar story unfolds; DivX files play quickly and look solid, but again none of the DivX HD files in the MKV format are even recognised by the TX-L32D28BP. The TV’s USB slots are multi-skilled, though they can take a webcam for Skype video calling, a keyboard for Viera Cast; though it is hardly necessary or even a Wi-Fi dongle.

Viera Tools:

All of the above mentioned features can be accessed through Viera Tools, a shortcut button that brings up a line of icons across the bottom of the screen. It includes an option to pause live TV, though that has got nothing to do with its ability with external USB hard drives; it works only if you possess a Panasonic Diga recorder connected through the HDMI port. The Viera Tools also provides you with access to the TX-L32D28BP’s DLNA networking feature, and it is fair to say that it is Panasonic’s best attempt yet. Though the interface is not quite there, it still has a PC feel and we managed to get it to stream music and photos within seconds, from iTunes and iPhoto, respectively, on a Mac installed with the TwonkyMedia. When you stream photos, the same piano jazz starts-up with slideshows once again. However, the videos of all formats were issued with a curt ‘cannot read file’ message.

Performance:

Panasonic LCD TVs are an enigma. Some do a good job with SD material and some manage better with HD. We have not really found one handle both well until we came across the TX-L32D28. This is not to say that this TV is perfect, though, it still has some traditional Panasonic LCD problems. For instance, the image is quite soft and some details are absent with Freeview and SD video. This can be corrected somewhat by increasing the sharpness and turning down the noise-reduction settings though, and that is quite encouraging.

HD Performance:

The High definition content looks quite good and sharp on this TX-L32D28 LED Television, which is not really surprising, given that it has a 32-inch, 1080/24p panel. The picture will be quite impressive, but you can get better results if you tweak a few settings. Panasonic’s ‘intelligent frame creation’ mode is designed for smooth film motion, and make movies look as silky as video. The TX-L32D28 suffers from quite bad distortion around moving objects when this mode is turned on, however. This issue is pretty common with frame-creation modes; we are just baffled as to why these features are included when they harm the picture quality. Freeview HD content looks good. It is just a shame that there are so many idiotic shopping channels on Freeview. Perhaps if there were less of these, we could have more HD.

Blu-Ray Picture Performance:

Most of the constituent parts of a reference Blu-ray picture are present on the TX-L32D28BP, though a touch more contrast and shadow detailing along with a more forgiving frame insertion feature would take it alarmingly close to LED perfection.

Audio Performance:

Moving on to the audio, there is plenty of vocal detail coming from the TX-L32D28BP’s slim speakers, just enough for digital TV, for sure, but any kind of width and low frequency action proves too much to ask from a super slim 32-inch LED TV. For general viewing purposes, the TX-L32D28’s audio is perfectly acceptable, but you are going to be disappointed if you try to watch a movie on it. We are saying this time and again, but you really need external speakers to get acceptable sound from flat-panel TVs. You will not have to spend much, but it is worth looking into something simple, like a soundbar, to add an extra dimension to your entertainment experience.

Warranty:

Panasonic offers its first LED TV, the TX-L32D28BP one year warranty for parts and labour.

Verdict:

Being easy on the eye on all fronts, the TX-L32D28BP hides hi-def pictures, easy DLNA networking for music and photos and a wide viewing angle within an excellent design, while the prospect of Skype and more on-demand programming on Viera Cast means this TV will keep on giving. On the other side, the Standard Definition pictures can disappoint, as can its USB and SD card slots; neither appear to play DivX HD files and it is incredibly fussy when it comes to your hard drive choice for USB recording. There are also some average speakers and a creaking user interface that does not do justice to either the Freesat HD or Freeview HD platforms. It can be said that its seductive purple surround is hiding plenty of minor flaws.

An inch-and-a-half deep may not sound much considering the TX-L32D28BP’s huge haul of features, but it is actually a tad fatter than most edge-lit LED TVs. Overall, it is a well designed LED TV that produces an excellent picture performance that sees it over the hurdles of a clunky interface and fussy approach to digital media. But those are sideshows; the TX-L32D28BP may be expensive, but it has got a load more talent than your average 32-inch LCD TV.

Philips 40PFL9704H LED Television

Philips has been a pioneer in producing futuristic designs and innovations. The Compact Disc which is now a household necessity and the latest Blu ray technology are some of the outcomes of its joint humble efforts to look beyond and create something new. Its amazing history has helped it to fix its place among the stars that we see on its logo.

Philips has since; set the stakes higher with many of its electronic products and its eco label, putting their competitors back to work. One such example is the 40PFL9704H/12 FULL HD 9000 Series LED TV that it has rolled out. This 40 inch beast LED backlit LCD TV promises quality as well as quantity. Let us see how well it keeps it promise.

Design:

LED Technology:

The Philips 40PFL9704H is not a true LED display but an LED backlit LCD Television. LCD televisions cannot produce light themselves. They require illumination to produce a clear picture. Backlighting means that the LCD is illuminated from either the back or from the side. Philips makes use the latest LED PRO backlighting. In this case, there are over one thousand LEDs situated along the side and their light is scattered using reflectors. These can be dimmed or brightened in bright and dark areas respectively, giving you more control over the screen picture resulting in flawless tones. Some of the other major factors to influence the stunning display are the Perfect Pixel HD Engine and Ambilight technology. The Perfect Pixel HD Engine is Philips best picture processing technology. It is compatible with all signals like 480p, 720p or 1,080p and gives you great picture.  The Ambilight, with a mind of its own, adjusts the light around the television to enhance your acquaintance with quality image. We will discuss these further, later on.

Build Quality:

The Philips 40PFL9704H 40? LED Television has dimensions of (H x W x D) 987 X 630 X 89 millimetres and weighs around 22.6 kilograms. Its design and build have captivated many and people swear by its ability to withstand natural disasters. It might seem a bit amusing but the hyperbole is well served. The matte aluminium finish is a welcome change. To appreciate the product more, we have to get acquainted with a few terms.

Features:

Contrast:

Contrast ratio is the ratio of luminance of the highest colour, i.e. white, to that of the darkest, i.e. black. Higher the ratio, better the quality of the display. Finally, with a response time of 1ms, it is one of the finest in its class. Let us move on to more of its unique features.

Perfect Pixel High Definition Engine:

High Definition is one attribute that all the latest LED televisions come with and have to keep up. With high definition, the resolution is 5 times the standard definition, redefining quality. Perfect Pixel technology takes this to a whole new level. It improves any signal in several steps and brings to us a richer image. The first step is carried out using the latest motion detection and advanced motion compensation interpolation techniques. It detects the traditional film inadequacies like motion judder and corrects them, resulting in levelled motion and utmost sharpness. The second step involves enhancing sharpness, colour, and contrast and artifact reduction to improve every individual pixel.  The colour booster adds up to 2250 trillion colours with amazing vividness. The dynamic contrast ratio speaks for itself. Analogue and digital artifacts are reduced considerably. The outcome of Philip’s Digital Noise Reduction and MPEG Artifact Detection and Reduction is amazing detail without loss of clarity.

The final step is the 200Hz Clear LCD. Here, the response time is noticeably shortened and the frequency tells us that we are offered the best motion picture devoid of blurs and motion lag. Lastly, what you end up with a scintillating display.

Ambilight Spectra 3:

Another exclusive Philips technology, the company invites viewers to jump into what they refer to as an immersive viewing experience. Ambilight, short for Ambient Lighting Technology, is an exclusive Philips patented feature. The lighting system adjusts both brightness and colour corresponding to the video content. It functions by projecting light from behind the screen onto the wall. The effect is magical and on-screen reflections are also eliminated. The lights can also be set to match the interior as you like. This wonderfully crafted technology in action took our breath away. The three sided illumination will have you longing for more.

EPG and Menu Systems:

The menu style in Philips 40PFL9704H 40-inch Full HD 1080p LED LCD TV is satisfactory and easy enough to navigate through. It is easier to change to options like switching to any of the devices connected to the five included HDMI input sockets. The current and upcoming programs are displayed conveniently while surfing channels. The EPG, short for electronic program guide, was found to be really slow but it can be avoided.

DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance):

This is revolutionising the way we sync, transfer, and download files from one device to the other. For example, in order to play a video stored in our personal computer on our television set, we would burn it onto a disk and then carry it over to the DVD player. DLNA is a major shortcut to this process. All you require is a home network, either wired or wireless, and DLNA certified products. The world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computer and mobile phone companies have joined hands to create a network without barriers. DLNA certified products will work like a family regardless of the brand, connecting and communicating with each other with the click of a button.

All this said and done, this is perhaps the only shortcoming of the Philips television. It has one, no worries about that, but it did not amount to much. The response time was a bit slow and the videos could not play well enough.

Wi-Fi:

Wi-Fi enables us to catch video, catch-up TV, and various online services from news, weather ,etc and fits on to the display.Net TV is another interesting feature which allows you to access entertainment on the internet.

Performance:

Audio:

Philips scored where others had failed. The sound management system is by far the best offered. The two dome tweeters have been fit integrated in the front and the woofers at the back. They give their best and have been proved to be the best. They both work together to give us high quality sound with high output. It has been compared with Samsung LED televisions, which happen to be the best in the market, and guess what? It has surpassed them in this realm.

Video:

We think we have said enough about its picture but why not summarize it one last time? A pinch of LED backlighting with LED Pro, an ounce of Perfect Pixel HD Engine technology coupled with the essence of the Ambilight gives us the most exhilarating viewing experience. Its glossy anti reflection screen will make your Friday night movie session an activity to look forward to. It is sure to reward your eyes with fluid motion picture, extreme sharpness and vibrant colours.

Power Consumption:

Philips efforts in producing environmental friendly gadgets were always fruitful. A majority of their products come with the EU ECO label which indicates high efficiency and absence of harmful substances. This television comes with Eco Mode which helps save power. The acclaimed Philips LED Pro technology uses 50% less power and even less when in standby mode. It consumes about 91W of power on an average and less than 0.15W in standby mode.

The other components that are included are the tabletop swivel stand, antennae cable, power cord, quick start guide, warranty certificate, remote control and brochures explaining safety rules and Net TV.

Verdict:

The Philips 40PFL9704H LED Television has created a class of its own. Philips has really outdone itself this time leaving no stone unturned. With first class audio and video performance, Philips’ innovative minds have redefined the way we think of good quality. They have evidently raised the stakes higher with their new and improved Ambilight Spectra 3 which just takes your breath away. The Perfect Pixel HD Engine makes a picture perfect. Designed to make a difference, it will take your viewing experience to whole new level. This Philips LED Television has been a strong contender and though it has been in the market for a while, it remains unrivalled.

It has given Samsung, the king of LED televisions, a run for its money. It also walked away with quite a lot of awards. The LED Pro and Perfect Pixel technology have both received awards .The European Imaging and Sound Association awarded it European TV 2009-2010. All this said and done, the only thing that will set you grumbling is its price. Well, excellence comes at a cost. So, if you want the best, then bring out your piggy bank.

Sony Bravia KDL-46NX703 LED TV Review

In the recent years, Sony had got itself into a nasty habit of releasing TVs that were not up to the high standard the brand was expected to deliver, and costing an awful lot too. Now, the company has promised a change of direction after a shocking financial result. However, Sony is now determined to prove that it has got what it takes to win over our hearts once again. With its latest Bravia KDL-46NX703 LED TV, Sony promises give your lounge a whole new look, get the picture perfect view, change the way you enjoy internet and get access to free digital HD TV. The NX703 is especially a stylish one and even offers a little more when it comes to features than an average television. This 46” model that we are reviewing here costs around £1,700, though we are sure that the price will drop in future, for now, it is certainly not very cheap. Read on to find out if it does what it says on the tin.

Design:

Truly Monolithic:

Sony has not done anything in its styling to differentiate its range of TVs from anything else on the market in 2009. Most of the time, its displays were pretty mundane. However, this year, the ‘Monolith’ design has made the company proud as a peacock. In the recent Sony TV reviews that boast its monolithic design, we have bemoaned the fact that the potential impact and purity of the design has been reduced by its surprisingly chunky rear ends. The Bravia KDL-46NX703 Full HD LED Television comes in as a breath of fresh air, using as it does edge LED backlighting to be much more slender than the other Sony models we have seen. Remember, we are not talking about Samsung’s level of slenderness here, as the bottom end of the TV sticks out more than 60mm. But, it is slender enough to finally truly deliver a monolithic profile.

Black and white:

The Bravia KDL-46NX703 LED TV model is available in finishing of black and white and the white one is the one, which we found rather very fetching. The Monolith concept is so-called because the single panel makes the TV look like one piece of glass. It is certainly a very smart idea, but it is much more practical when the bezel is black, rather than white. We liked the way the white is offset by the silver enclosure running around the bezel’s extremities. However, personally, we prefer the less ‘fancy’ black version; though obviously it is always nice to have a choice. You will not be disappointed if you stump up some extra cash for Sony’s striking and innovative new silver speaker bar and desktop stand combo, within which you will be able to tilt the display gently back to provide you with extra visual impact and visual pleasure.

Remote control:

The remote included is a handsome one too and it has been very well thought out, and is quite funky too. Its curves give it an unusual but comfortable feel. The heart of the very attractive and comfortable remote control comprises two concentric circles of important, regularly used buttons. The controls work well and there are no issues with the fact that they are rather flat, in a half-moon shaped dip. Sony has seen fit to include a single off switch on the back too. This harks back to when the company used to offer remotes that could be flipped between a simple or more complicated style, but it has taken the idea to a whole new level.

Connectivity and Slots:

The 46NX703 is a part of the Network series of Sony’s new Bravia range, and so, it is no surprise to find it bristling with connections. The connectivity features include four HDMIs: two on the rear, two down the side: lead the way, but there is extensive multimedia support from a D-Sub PC jack, an Ethernet port, and a USB socket. Even better, unlike other recent Sony TVs, the 46NX703 boasts built-in Wi-Fi support rather than forcing you to cough up for an optional extra USB Wi-Fi dongle. This leaves the USB port free to do multimedia duties, playing photo, music and video files from USB storage devices. It also makes the provision of just one USB input easier to take than it has been on Sony sets where you do have to use a Wi-Fi USB dongle. The network connectivity of the TV is there, too, to support its built-in Freeview HD tuner; to access files on DLNA PCs; and to stream video from Sony’s truly impressive ‘Bravia Internet Video’ roster of online content.

However we have a small complaint; some of the sockets at the rear of the TV are a little hard to push cables in to. The HDMI inputs in particular are hidden in a recess, which makes it extremely hard to get a chunkier cable in. Of course, this is not the end of the world, but it might end up causing you issues if you have a lot invested in very sturdy, bulky cables. Other than that, as we just mentioned, the TV has enough connections, although four HDMI inputs are beginning to feel like it might not be enough for today’s world.

Features:

Xross Media Bar:

If you are a Sony fan, you might well be aware of the fact that it does love a Cross Media Bar, or as it calls it, Xross Media Bar. The best thing about this menu system is that, it displays a vast amount of its content and options in an unintimidating way. The main horizontal bar has options for settings, video, audio and channels, with vertical bars leading off them for each option. Anyone who is used to a PlayStation 3 will be familiar with the system, but we assure you that there is no massive learning curve for new users.

Picture processing options:

The Sony KDL46NX703 46-inch LED Screen TV has plenty of picture processing tricks up its sleeve. Particularly noteworthy is its carriage of Motionflow 100Hz, which is something conspicuously absent from 32NX503 Sony Network TV. But you also get Sony’s Live colour system along with Sony’s usually Mr.Dependable Bravia Engine 3 system. When it comes to fine tuning of pictures, we could not help but think that a £1,700 46in TV could have run to a proper colour management system. Especially as this might have enabled Sony to seek an endorsement from the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF); but the 46NX703 is colour management free.  Now, everything is not too negative about the options the 46NX703 has to offer, as there are actually some interesting things tucked away in an Advanced Settings submenu, including black boosters, white balance settings, and the facility to adjust the TV’s Motionflow and Film Mode processing.

Fun on the net:

Like most of the modern TVs in today’s market, the NX703 too is Internet-aware. This means Skynet will happily get you movies, on-demand TV and other information from the Internet for you. Highlights include Channel 5’s Demand Five catchup service, Eurosport, YouTube, and best of all, LoveFilm, complete with syncing to your LoveFilm account.  Upcoming, too, is the BBC’s fabulous iPlayer. All of this makes your TV one of the most flexible entertainment centres you will be able to buy. Note that, the LoveFilm service is free if you subscribe to any of its ‘unlimited’ packages, however, here is the catch: not all of its titles are available for streaming. In order to set it up, you have to visit the web site and register your device with a short, four-digit PIN. Then, you have to select the movie you want to watch, and off you go. Brilliant! However, the ‘Demand Five’ service requires lesser configuration, and works off the bat with no excessive tweaking. It is quite cool indeed, we just cannot wait to see what other services Sony adds in the future. Suffice it to say that the list of content providers is huge, startlingly – almost eccentrically! – varied, and delivered with both quality and stability for the most part. All of this means, it is certainly ahead of many of its rivals.

Performance:

Standard Definition:

The Sony Bravia KDL-46NX703 is the first mainstream edge LED-lit LCD TV we have seen from Sony, so we could not help but have concerns over how well it might perform. But happily it quickly sets about putting the vast majority of these concerns to bed. Particularly pleasing given some previous Sony failings in that department are the 46NX703’s black levels. The picture quality of Standard-definition is nothing to worry about. The Sony Bravia KDL-46NX703 LED TV is competent enough at delivering a reasonably noise free image. As with most of the Freeview broadcasts, there can be few MPEG blocking, but this is a product of ever-decreasing bit rates, rather than the fault of the TV.

High Definition:

The HD pictures from Freeview’s new high definition services simply look marvellous. We watched some of them and they simply knocked our socks off. Bright colours are nice and good and the definition is excellent too and the TV does a terrific job of balancing everything, so you are never overwhelmed.

Blu-Ray:

Blu-ray is nothing less either, it looks simply superb. The performance on our test disc was top-quality. Smashing job by Sony. The screen can produce one of the deepest black colours we have seen on an edge LED TV, providing a great foundation against which the image’s actually very bright and fully saturated flavour can shine. The KDL-46NX703 makes use of an LED edge light to illuminate its LCD panel. There is not quite as much shadow detail in dark areas as you get with Samsung’s lighter C8000 sets, but then the C8000s can leave black colours looking a little grey. On balance, we felt that we liked the approach of Sony. Light bleed is noticeable on a totally black screen, but is not distracting during normal viewing. A little bleed is inevitable with edge-lit pictures, and the Sony is not ahead of the pack here, but it is not worse than the majority of its competitors either.

Audio:

As is usually the case with very slim TVs, the 46NX703’s audio is not in the same quality league as its pictures. It is open and powerful enough to deliver voices and treble detailing with a degree of authenticity, making it perfectly workable with normal, undemanding TV fare. But bass sounds trapped and unconvincing, leaving busy film soundstages feeling thin and lopsided.

Warranty:

The Sony Bravia KDL-46NX703 LED TV comes with a very attractive 5 year warranty for parts and labour.

Verdict:

With its runway looks, outstanding pictures and exemplary multimedia talents, the 46NX703 is definitely one of Sony’s finest hours. The Internet functionality of this TV makes it a very attractive option for the high-tech crowd. But it has a lot of other features to make it a very decent purchase for anyone looking for a new TV. The inclusion of the Freeview HD is terrific, and we adored both the picture quality and the design. Overall, it is a tidy TV, and is a great step forward from a company that has not exactly thrilled its fans recently. However, we were quite resistant whether to recommend the Sony Bravia 46NX703 because of its rather steep £1,700 price. But then we took into account its 5-year warranty, and the fact that you can knock £150 off the price by trading in any old piece of TV that you might have lying around your house, and thus decided that all was well with the 46NX703’s world after all.

LG 50PK750 50″ Flat-Panel TV Reviews

People have been tolling plasma’s death knell for what seems like years, but the “other” flat-panel technology is still available from LG, Samsung, and Panasonic. The first 2010 model we’ve tested is LG’s PK750 series, and it exhibits the same plasma characteristics–better off-angle viewing and uniformity than LCD; worse energy efficiency–as ever. Its depth of black, though better than last year’s LG plasmas, still can’t compete with its brethren from those other brands’ plasmas, or with the better LCDs available. That said, we appreciate the PK750’s style and feature set at this price level, especially compared with similarly equipped 2010 models like the Panasonic TC-P50G25 and the Samsung PN50C6500. If you’re looking for a midrange plasma and don’t demand videophile image quality, the PK750 deserves consideration.

If price is not an issue and you are looking for the most elegant looking 3D capable TVs for your home, then you might want to look at some of Samsung’s LED TVs instead, however, if you, like most people are on a budget, then this is an excellent television to consider for your hometheater system.

The PN63C7000 features a plasma panel display that brings with it all the advantages inherent to plasma TVs. Additionally, the lack of a backlight in plasma panels prevents any of the issues with non-uniform backlighting and “cloudiness” that can be observed on some LED TVs. On the downside, plasma panels are not as bright as LED LCD TVs. Thus, viewing 3D content through 3D glasses can be a bit dimmer on Plasma 3D TVs as compared to LCD 3D HDTVs. If you tend to watch movies and TV in a very bright environment, you might want to consider getting the UN55C8000 instead of the PN63C7000.

This plasma 3D TV also features Samsung’s Real Black Filter technology which helps to minimize glare and reflections from external light sources, thus improving the image quality and black levels in situations where there is considerable ambient light.

The PN63C7000 has a native resolution of 1080p, i.e. 1920 x 1080. This is pretty much the standard for all 3D TVs being released in 2010. The only exception to this rule is the Toshiba Cell TVs which have a native 2K display. However, given that there aren’t any sources of HD content with a resolution higher than 1080p, this resolution should be plenty for the next 5-6 years.

The Samsung PN63C7000 plasma display features Samsung’s 600Hz Subfield Motion technology. Samsung, like most other manufacturers in 2010, has adopted Active shutter based 3D technology for the PNC7000 series. Given that the advantages of Active Shutter technology when it comes to LCD and Plasma panels, this seems to be the right choice for now. The 1080p display will allow viewers to enjoy full HD 3D content in 1080p. Samsung has already released Active Shutter 3D Glasses for their lineup of 3D TVs in 2010.

The PN63C7000 features Samsung’s Internet@TV that includes new apps allowing consumers to easily navigate a large assortment of content and applications from services such as AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV , Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Twitter, USA TODAY, Vudu and a number of other online content/service providers. Samsung, like most other manufacturers in 2010, has adopted Active shutter based 3D technology for the PNC7000 series. Given that the advantages of Active Shutter technology when it comes to LCD and Plasma panels, this seems to be the right choice for now. The 1080p display will allow viewers to enjoy full HD 3D content in 1080p. Samsung has already released Active Shutter 3D Glasses for their lineup of 3D TVs in 2010.

The PN58C7000 features Samsung’s Internet@TV that includes new apps allowing consumers to easily navigate a large assortment of content and applications from services such as AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV , Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Twitter, USA TODAY, Vudu and a number of other online content/service providers. These applications can be downloaded and viewed while watching TV. A number of paid apps will also be made available for the PN58C7000 throughout the year.

The PN58C7000 also has DLNA networking capabilities for streaming content from other DLNA devices. It comes with a slew of A/V ports including 4 HDMI 1.4 ports, 2 sets of component inputs, a VGA port and 2 high speed USB ports.

The PN58C7000 from Samsung is an excellent 58 inch 3D Plasma TV for consumers who are on the lookout for a relatively cheap 3D capable TV that still retains excellent image quality and the ability to deliver an immersive 3D experience. It is also cheaper than the PN58C8000 and there isn’t much of a difference between the two, so we would gladly recommend the PN58C7000 to most consumers.

Free 3D Bluray Player and Shrek 3D Starter Kit with Samsung 3D TVs

This holiday season, Amazon has a number of great 3D TV deals for a number of different manufacturer’s 3D HDTVs. To promote Samsung’s large line of 3D LED TVs, they are offering a great deal consisting of a free 3D Blu-ray player and the Shrek 3D Starter Kit (2-3D Activeshutter glasses, 3-3D  Blurays of all the Shrek movies plus a voucher for the fourth as yet unreleased version) with every purchase of a qualifying Samsung 3D TV . This is a Christmas deal and is scheduled to run out on January 15th, 2011.
