Samsung UN32C6500 Review

The Samsung 32UNC6500 offers consumers a truly watchable, yet somewhat less than spectacular viewing experience, though the wide range of streaming and integrated apps sure do make watching midlevel mediocrity fun.  The picture quality of the UNC6500 is decent, maybe even good for a mid level edge lit LED-based LCD but this TV runs the gambit of known issues that tend to plague LCDs.  Plus, the price point reflects a much better viewing experience than the consumer truly experiences.

Though not as impressive as several of its cousins (think: UNC8000), the UNC6500 was no lightweight when it came to producing an enjoyable TV watching experience.  I had hoped that the black levels would have been deeper than there were, but to be honest, they were considerably better than most of the other edge lit LCD TVs I’ve tested recently.  The colors looked true and real as long as the scenes were brightly lit, but once the lights were turned down their punch was significantly reduced. 

Black level: The Samsung UNC6500 wasn’t as spectacular as I’d hoped in this department but it really wasn’t a slouch either.  If you could just watch brightly lit, full action flicks this television did well in here, but darker movies tended to display the issues related to the blacks.  The blacks appeared to be washed out and faded the darker the scene became.  This really made watching movies such as the “Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter” tough to swallow.

Shadow details were good here, but they were a bit less realistic than I’d hoped for.  Once again, this issue only occurred in darker scenes, so it really wasn’t a deal breaker for me.

Color accuracy: For the most part, primary and secondary color accuracy was generally good.  There was, however, a bluish cast to everything on the screen.  This was especially noticeable in the lighter colors such as skin tones as well as in shaded areas that neared black.  This issue was readily visible; however it wasn’t as bothersome as I thought it might be.  After a few minutes, it simply faded into the background. 

Uniformity: I didn’t have a really high bar set in terms of screen uniformity for this TV and unfortunately I wasn’t disappointed.  Like the other edge-lit LED-based LCDs I’ve sampled, the Samsung UNC6500 showed some brightening along the lower edge of the screen.  This problem persisted throughout both dark and bright images.  There was a noticeable brightening in all four corners as well as at the left vertical.   This was really a problem for me as I found my eye drawn toward the brighter areas, especially during darker scenes, which was really distracting. 

Off-angle viewing was bad.  The blacks washed out pretty significantly and the colors lost what little punch they had.  As a matter of fact, the color degradation is one of the worst I’ve seen so far, if not THE worst.  This television does not lend itself to fitting into a number of furniture arrangements which will make it a tough buy for many.

Bright lighting: There was a big issue with ambient light glare and reflection thanks to the addition of the glossy screen.  There may be some black level preservation, but the trade off is not a good one in my opinion.  

Standard-definition: I truly enjoyed watching standard definition DVDs on this set.  The details were a little softer than with high definition media but all in all, watching them was truly an enjoyable experience.  I felt much the same way about watching broadcast TV as well.  IN terms of viewability, this TV actually did better with standard def than it did with high def content.

Unless you never plan on watching this television above a whisper, I would definitely suggest adding an external speaker system to your buggy before you get to the check out counter.  This television, while not any better or any worse than any other LCD on the market (unless you count a few of the Mitsubishis), is prone to significant sound distortion and vibration. 

Samsung has never been cheap when it comes to adding the extras to its television line up and the UNC6500 is no exception in this category.  First and foremost, let’s take a look at the impossibly slim panel.  Look out Twiggy!  This TV is super flat, meaning that it will look fabulous on your wall.  There is really nothing to write home about in terms of the chassis, as it is gloss black just like all the others. 

The remote included with the UNC6500 is not anything utterly amazing, but it gets the job done fairly well.  The standard raised buttons are well placed and easy to use, but the finish on the remote itself fingerprinted every time I picked it up.  It’s kind of like those early model stainless steel refrigerators.  They always look dirty. 

 

Streaming apps is the name of the game here and Samsung really packs in the popular ones.  Hulu Plus is definitely a bonus in my book and Samsung is one of the only LCD TVs to offer it (Vizio and Sony are the others).  DailyMotion, CinemaNow and Blockbuster are also included.  You also get all of the regular video streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and YouTube, all of which worked as expected.  Audio streaming is made possible with the help of Pandora and Napster.  All of the streaming services with the exception of Amazon and Synch TV are integrated apps

At around $1200, the UNC6500 is priced on the upper end of mid level.  And, even though this TV is packed with plenty of extras, the primary function, picture quality, is lacking just enough that it makes me pause before calling it a good value.  Don’t get me wrong, the picture is watchable, but I’ve seen several other units that leave out a few extras and produce a much better picture for less.  

The Samsung UNC6500 is nothing spectacular, though it performs reasonably well among its peer group.  It exhibits several of the same characteristic flaws of other LCD televisions including lighter black levels, typical bluing and poor off angle viewing.  However, its wide array of integrated apps and sleek styling make it an attractive TV for many.

Sharp Aquos LC-70LE732U Review

The Sharp Aquos LC70LE-732U is the largest television I’ve ever reviewed.  As a matter of fact, it’s the largest main stream flat panel TV on the market today.  Not only is it big in size, but it is big in quality too, delivering as solid picture, though there are a few flaws that will be mentioned later.  And, it’s a bit on the expensive side.

The Sharp Aquos LC 70LE732U is big.  There just aren’t two ways about it.  And, while there’s something to be said about having one of the biggest small screens available when it comes to watching your favorite flick, I can’t help but believe that there will be a limited market for such a large screen.  It’s going to be tough to sell such a large screen to people who can’t fit it into their living rooms.

With that being said, this television offered one of the better pictures that I’ve seen thus far from the LED based LCDs this year.  The movie preset was the most accurate out of the box, offering one of the most linear grayscales.  The color gamut is “Expanded” to show off the additional yellow pixel, but this creates a rather inaccurate palette of secondary colors. 

Black levels:  The Sharp offered a solid performance in this category, besting several of the other LCDs I’ve reviewed this year.  The blacks were deep and realistic, which really sets the tone for the movie by providing some great contrast to the colors.

Shadow details were vivid and sharp, which was a fantastic surprise, even if they were a bit brighter than I would have hoped.  The blacks were significantly less blue and way more accurate than many of the other LCDs I’ve seen, so kudos to Sharp for minimizing that particular issue.

Color Accuracy: Overall, the Sharp turned in a decent performance here.  The colors were solid, though there were a few issues worth mentioning.  Skin tones were definitely a plus, offering natural, realistic looking characters.  Green and blue looked a bit washed out, though. 

Uniformity: At first, I really didn’t notice any particular screen uniformity issues, but as I continued to watch it, the more noticeable a few issues became.  There wasn’t any particularly bothersome lightening in the corners or edges as I would have expected.  But, there were some obvious fluctuations in the vertical banding during bright motion scenes.  These were minor, however, and weren’t a deal breaker for me.     

Off angle viewing wasn’t terrible, but with such a large screen, it was pretty obvious to me that the sweet spot was much larger as well.  Simply put, in a normal household, it would be tough to place seating far enough away from center to cause a viewing issue. 

Bright lighting: The matte screen and solid light output made this particular unit very well suited to brightly lit viewing conditions.  I found it tough to actually find any ambient light glare or reflections in the screen at all. 

Standard-definition: Standard definition media playback was decent.  DVDs were replayed well, even if the details appeared somewhat softer than I had hoped. 

If there was a true drawback to this TV, it would be the quality of the audio output.  That’s really not saying much, though, since most flat panel televisions struggle in this category.  If you find that audio distortion and vibration is an issue for you, I would suggest that you add an external speaker system to your purchase.

When it comes to features, the Sharp really does shine. 

As far as design goes, the Sharp is a sharp looking set, but Sharp was smart to leave this set relatively unremarkable in the design category and let the sheer size of the TV speak for itself.  It’s mostly gloss black plastic with a rather normal sized bezel.  Really not much to write home about. 

 

The remote control is somewhat cheap looking and feeling.  It’s somewhat longer and thinner than many of the competitors’ clickers, but overall unsatisfactory.   I didn’t like the fact that the keys were somewhat small and tough to differentiate between under darkroom conditions, especially since Sharp didn’t add a backlight feature.  But, it is nice to see that you can control up to three peripheral pieces of equipment through this remote.

You get the gambit of goodies with this one including integrated Wi-Fi, plenty of audio and video streaming apps (although Amazon and YouTube are missing) and a few nice widgets.  The Vudu interface is easy to use and generally well received, but the main Aquos Net interface could use some work. 

At just under $3800, the Sharp LC-70LE732U is an expensive TV.  Of course, it is the largest flat panel TV on the market today, has a nice picture,  and offers plenty of extras; it’s tough in this economy to justify the extra expense when there are several 65 inch models that can offer the same deal for a lot less. 

Overall, I really enjoyed living large and reviewing the Sharp 70LE732U.  There’s no other television on the market today that allows you to bring the big screen home to your living room.  The picture was great, though the audio output left a lot to be desired.  But, I think that this will be a tough sell for Sharp as too many people will find it tough to either pay the money or fit this monster into their living rooms.

Samsung Series 8 LED TV review

If we had one gripe with the Samsung Series 8, it would be that its price is too high and the screen sizes on offer are limited. The Series 8 plasma looks almost as good, is a bit cheaper and offers larger screen sizes. Considered on its own, the Samsung Series 8 is one of the best LED TVs we’ve seen.

The Series 8 is Samsung’s top-tier LED TV, with all the features of lesser TVs like the Series 7 and Series 6 as well as boosts to picture quality and video processing. If you can afford to pay for it it’s an excellent TV with no crippling flaws — the few problems are mainly restricted to the TV’s Web features. However, its Series 8 plasma rival has almost equal picture quality and offers larger screen sizes.

The Series 8 looks just like its Series 8 plasma sibling, apart from a much thinner bezel around its 55in screen. The 5mm thick chromed bezel blends into the space behind the television, so in a dimly-lit room the Series 8’s screen stands out. It’s a very modern-looking TV — times have changed since chunky piano black LCD TVs dominated the market two years ago. The Loewe-esque four-legged stand is a feature we have liked on Samsung’s TVs since 2010, so we’re happy to see the trend continuing here.

At 29.7mm thick the Series 8 is a reasonably slim TV. It’s not as stunning as the Series 9 LED TV from 2010, which was thinner than a pencil, but we think the Series 8 would look great mounted against a wall with Samsung’s thin picture-frame wall mount.

The Samsung Series 8 is bundled with a novel remote control, which has a standard remote control layout on one side and a QWERTY tactile keyboard on the other. The QWERTY keyboard makes entering Web addresses or router passwords much easier than the traditional remote control keypad, and we like its inclusion even though we think it’ll get minimal day-to-day use. We did have some trouble getting used to flipping it over when a text-friendly prompt came up, and we found we had to be within a few metres of the TV to use it.

Just like the Series 8 plasma, the Series 8 LED has four HDMI ports, a couple of USB 2.0 connectors, Ethernet, built-in Wi-Fi, digital audio out, VGA and break-out ports for component and composite video. The TV’s active shutter 3D glasses sync up through an inbuilt infrared transmitter.

We don’t think there’s anything major missing here, but a couple more USB 2.0 ports on the Samsung Series 8 would be nice — then you could attach a USB hard drive permanently to the TV to store a music or movie library.

If you get hung up on what extra features you get with your high-end TV, Samsung’s got you covered. The Series 8 has, by our reckoning, the best Web features of any TV on the market at the moment. Sony’s Internet TV beats out the Samsung setup in the sheer number of video services on offer, though.

The iOS-like grid layout of Samsung’s Smart Hub is easy to navigate, and Samsung’s App Store equivalent lets you pick and choose what services you want your TV to access. Like any marketplace there are bad eggs (Twitter and Facebook are much easier to use on a real PC) and good ones (Google Maps is fun on a big screen, and BigPond Movies on Demand is convenient), but the freedom to add or remove apps is excellent — if this ‘smart TV’ trend continues, we think it’s something all manufacuters should do.

The Series 8 is one of only a few Samsung TVs with a built-in Web browser. Used in conjunction with the QWERTY remote, it’s serviceable enough if you’re too slothful to get up off the couch and go to a computer. It also supports a variety of rich Internet protocols like HTML5 and Flash, so you’re not going to have a gimped browsing experience. Microsoft’s Silverlight protocol is missing but we didn’t find this an issue. At the end of the day, you’re still going to get a better Web browser in a PC.

Samsung’s high-end TVs have always impressed us with their excellent detail and colour, especially the LED models and especially when displaying High Definition content. The Series 8 LED TV continues that trend and takes it slightly further than last year’s Series 7. The changes aren’t mind-blowing, but we didn’t expect them to be considering Samsung was working from such a high quality template.

The Series 8 is the only LED model in Samsung’s 2011 LED TV range to feature local dimming, where the TV’s LED edge-lights can dim individually to control the brightness in different areas of the screen. This theoretically allows deep blacks alongside bright whites and while it doesn’t have the same pin-point lighting accuracy as a plasma TV, the system works well. It’s only a problem when there are small areas of bright white light against a dark background, like rolling movie credits.

After running through Terminator: Salvation and The Dark Knight a few times and adjusting the TV’s settings from the Cinema preset (it’s the best preset, but you can still make it look better by lowering the brightness to suit your room and dropping sharpness slightly), we were consistently impressed with the picture quality and detail that the Samsung Series 8’s 55in panel displayed. It’s the most detailed TV we’ve seen when viewing Full HD video — Blu-rays look excellent.

Standard definition up-scaling of DVD and YouTube and other low resolution content is reasonable, but it’s not as clean or as sharp as the pictures we saw from the Sony BRAVIA HX820. This means that day-to-day digital TV looks marginally better on the Sony than the Samsung.

The one fault we could find with the Samsung Series 8’s picture quality was some bloom in the lower left and right corners of the screen on a black background — patches of extra brightness where the TV’s LED edge-lighting sits. We’ve seen this before on edge-lit LED TVs of all brands and all sizes, so it’s not an issue confined to this particular TV. If you want to avoid it, buy a plasma.

3D viewing is, to our eyes, marginally improved from last year’s TVs. There’s less cross-talk, where each eye sees a slight double-edge on 3D surfaces, and the effect seems to be stronger overall — perhaps a function of Samsung’s newer, lighter, brighter 3D glasses. We played through Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and some ocean documentaries and found the 3D effect to be generally acceptable. We’ve never experienced nausea while watching 3D TV and the Samsung Series 8 didn’t start our stomachs churning.

Hands-on Review: OPPO's First 3D Blu-ray Player

Fans of OPPO Digital's media players will tell you that the company offers the best of both worlds. In terms of product development and rollout, OPPO's approach is more like that of a high-end company: The goal is not to release a whole new product line every year and meet arbitrary deadlines; rather, the goal is to make sure that every product released meets high performance and quality standards.

The process involves careful selection of components and a lot of testing. With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

At just under 30mm thick and weighing just 10 kg, the Samsung UE32C6510 LED TV is one of the thinnest full HD televisions currently on the market.
With a 1920 x 1000 resolution and a white bezel, this set looks good on or off.

With full HD 1080p and Edge LED backlighting, Samsung have worked hard to bring visual clarity to the screen. Technology such as HyperReal Engine, Mega Dynamic Contrast and 100Hz Motion Plus (twice the number of image per second than regular televisions) all contribute to the optimum viewing experience.

The television has an Ultra Clear Panel meaning that only one sheet of glass is between the customer and the images, enabling optimum usage of the light in the room whilst decreasing reflection.
In addition, the LED backlighting combined with this technology also works to increase contrast where the system recognises it is necessary.

The Eco Sensor is a welcome touch, allowing the Samsung UE32C6510 to automatically assess the quality of light in the viewing room and calibrate the level of brightness being emitted accordingly.
This not only provides a greater degree of comfort on the eyes but also reduces unnecessary energy expenditure, helping both the environment and your bank balance.

Other automatic adjustments include a digital noise filter which improves the picture in poor transmission areas and Wide Colour Enhancer Plus, a pixel-busting feature which bring colours to life.

Despite not having 3D capability, the Samsung UE32C6510 has many other features to rival the top end models currently on the market.

Built in Freeview reduces the number of cables required and allows the customer to view programmes in true HD (where coverage is available in the country) with no contract and no hidden costs.

As a hybrid between TV and PC, this model enables connection to the internet via Samsung’s Internet@TV, allowing the user to browse many of the free and online services on the net. To connect either an Ethernet cable or a Dongle is required (available separately).

In other areas of multi-media, streaming of files such as video, music and photos is available together with direct downloads via the HDMI connection. Music files and photos can also be plugged directly into the set via a USB port. The television has 4 HDMI slots and 2 USB ports.

Samsung have recognised that viewing is now often from a variety of positions and so the screen is viewable from 45 degree angles. A white plastic stand matching the LED TV comes with the pack and the TV is suitable for either mounting (compatible with VESA 200 holdings) or for regular viewing, a TV stand is supplied at point of sale.

Also provided at the outset is the remote control. The technology incorporated into this handset means that all gadgets with corresponding Samsung capabilities can be controlled by this, negating the need for many different controllers.

Speakers on the television set are hidden and may not be immediately apparent. However, with surround sound technology, the speaker system is surprisingly good.

The model reviewed has the same specification as Samsungs C6530/C6540 range of LED TVs, the only difference being the colour of the outer bezel (frame of the panel).

Siesta iDock is fully compliant with Apple's "Made for iPod" and "Works with iPhone" programmes. Track and 'now playing' information is displayed on the Siesta iDock screen and users can control their iPod or iPhone via the radio when their iPhone or iPod is placed in the integrated dock.
