Toshiba Regza 40SL753

With Toshiba seemingly focussing more and more on becoming the leading budget TV brand, its once impressive reputation for innovation - at least where its UK operation is concerned - has been on the wane. And in one way the 40SL753 merely confirms this, for by being Toshiba?s very first edge LED TV, it immediately causes us to reflect on just how long it?s been since we saw the first edge LED TVs from the likes of Sony, Philips, Samsung, LG and, to a lesser extent, Panasonic.

Basically, the 40SL753?s arrival is long overdue. So it would be nice if it proves that Toshiba has been using its extra development time wisely in coming up with something a bit special.

Toshiba Regza 40SL753

Hopes that this may be so are reduced, however, by its lowly price of just ?612.70 - something we noticed about the 40SL753 actually well before we figured out its edge LED lighting. This price would look reasonably affordable on a normal CCFL LCD TV, never mind an edge LED model, and it immediately raises worries over what sort of price-driven compromises we might come across.

On the other hand, of course, if the 40SL753D turns out to be much cop, it will be a major bargain. Fingers crossed.

The 40SL753?s design is notably slimmer than the distinctly chunky butt efforts of most of Toshiba?s current CCFL LCD TVs, as we would expect. Though at around 50mm, its depth still has a long way to reduce until it gets close to the ultra-slender edge LED efforts we?re seeing these days from LG, Philips and especially Samsung and JVC. So much as JVC still actually has a UK TV operation these days, at any rate...

Toshiba Regza 40SL753 side view

Toshiba has also marked its edge LED debut by tweaking the 40SL753?s fascia design, equipping the dark bezel with a transparent outer trim that ends up making the TV pleasingly reminiscent of the look Samsung is using for the mainstream end of its current LCD range.

Turning the 40SL753 round uncovers a good collection of connections. Four HDMIs get the ball rolling, one of which is v1.4 to offer an audio return channel to compatible AV amps. But actually far more interesting are a pair of USB ports, an SD card slot, and an Ethernet port.

These provide, as you would expect, a selection of multimedia features. But sadly the support they offer is more restrictive than we would have hoped. For instance, the USBs and SD card slot can only play JPEG photos, not movie or music files. Worse, while the Ethernet port is capable of streaming in stuff from DLNA PCs, these PCs have to use Windows 7. And even then we found the number of file types the TV worked with extremely limiting.

46″ Toshiba 3D TV, Free 3D Glasses and Blu-Ray Player for $1200

We bring news of a great 3D TV Bundle deal that was recently announced by Amazon as part of their Holiday deals this year.  This deal is promoting Toshiba’s recently released 46WX800 3D LED TV. They are bundling 2 pairs of Toshiba’s 3D Glasses and a Toshiba 3D Blu-Ray disc player for Free. This is a Christmas deal and is scheduled to run out on December 31st, 2010.

Qualifying Toshiba 3D HDTVS

Check the link above for more details on this newly released 3D TV from Toshiba. You can also read plenty of positive reviews from Amazon users who have purchased this set. While we haven’t had a chance to review this set yet (it was released very recently), we have researched user reviews and feedback on a number of forums as well as those on Amazon and all the early indicators point to the WX800 series being an excellent value for money proposition for budget conscious shoppers looking for a great 3D TV deal this holiday season. The TV features edge-lit LED lighting with local dimming that works quite well, has very uniform backlighting with no reported flashlighting, or cloudiness for majority of customers so far and is actually quite an attractive TV. The Toshiba 3D Active shutter glasses are very comfortable (more-so than Sony’s or Panasonic’s) and the 3D works fairly well with little cross talk if you have good 3D content being fed to the TV. While it doesn’t have the 2D->3D upconversion features that some of the latest 3D TVs do, that shouldn’t be a deal breaker for most folks as it is something that never works very well to begin with. It also features some neat internet widgets that work quite well.

Overall, this amounts to a saving of over $1500 which is pretty nice!

Let’s look at what you’re getting. For around $1200, you are getting an excellent 46 inch 3D TV, 2 pairs of Free 3D Glasses and a 3D Blu-Ray player. Now consider that most 3D TVs from the other manufacturers cost over $1000 more just for the TV alone, and a lot of them such as the Sony TVs don’t include a 3D transmitter, glasses or a blu-ray player. So this is definitely a really slick deal and we strongly recommend you consider getting it. With Amazon’s excellent return policies, it is probably worth it to just give it a shot, see how you like it, and if you’re not happy for any reason, you can easily return it for a refund. And if you like it, you just saved yourself over $1500 and bought a pretty sweet 3D TV for a really nice price! :)

Happy shopping! Let us know if you scored a 3D TV using this deal. Feel free to vent in the comments section below if you’re conflicted about this, too broke to afford it, or can’t get the significant other to approve of the purchase :) .

Toshiba Regza GL1: 3D TV – On Sale In Japan

Toshiba Regza GL1: 3D TV – On Sale In Japan

Back in October, we reported on the Toshiba Regza GL1, bringing you the price and sizes of the TVs. Now we are letting you know that the 12” GL1 is going on sale from tomorrow, but unfortunately only in Japan.

Toshiba’s new TVs defeat the common aggravation of 3D televisions, the glasses that you have to wear to experience the 3D imaging. Toshiba’s new models have done what many companies are trying to do by developing a TV with no need for the goofy spectacles.

By providing a glasses free solution, Toshiba are now revolutionizing the market. We have heard reports that the 12” model has a resolution of 466 x 350 and retails for $1,431. There is another model, with a larger screen but this is expected to be double the cost.

The 20” model goes on sale on December 25th. We know that the larger model will come with a 550:1 contrast and a screen resolution of 720p. So what will be happening with Toshiba next? Hopefully they have plans for a bigger, better version of these great televisions. You can read more about this over at Engadget.com and also at gizmosync.com.

When these televisions hit the U.S. they could really take off and become market leaders. You have to wonder how Toshiba’s competitors will react to this. Another thing to consider is that CES is just around the corner and normally has a few televisions being released.

What do you think of these new TV’s? When they hit all of the other markets will you be getting one? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Toshiba Announces 3D Blu-ray Players, HDTVs

Toshiba America this week jumped feet-first into 3D with its first 3D TVs, and the announcement of a 3D-capable Blu-ray player.

However, the offerings won't include the reported 3DTV that won't require a special pair of 3D glasses.

Users purchasing the TVs must do so as part of a package, if they wish the full 3D effect, Toshiba said. Toshiba said this week that it would ship a 3D-capable Blu-ray player, the BDX-3000, in September, for $249.99. That player must be connected to a 3D-capable TV via a special HDMI cable capable of transmitting the bandwidth necessary for 3D content. Toshiba also claimed that the 3D glasses necessary to view the content were "optional".

The BDX-3000 is the company's first 3D-capable Blu-ray player, with features including BD 2.0 compatibility and and SD card slot. It's also connected via either Ethernet or Wi-Fi dongle, and can access online content from Netflix, Blockbuster on Demand, and Pandora, Toshiba said. It also supports Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio | Essential, it said.

The new 3D TVs will include the 55-inch 55WX800 Cinema Series 3D LED HDTV for $3,299 SRP and the 46-inch 46WX800 Cinema Series 3D LED HDTV for an SRP of $2,599.99, both available now. Toshiba also announced the 55VX700 and 46VX700 Cinema Series LED HDTVs, which lack 3D capability, and will cost $2,799.99 and $2,299.99, respectively.

The 240-Hz WX800 sets include 1.8-inch depth and support for MPEG4-MVC, RealD and "select other" 3D formats, which can be displayed in a "3D Resolution+" mode optimized for 3D content. The display supports a 7 million: 1 contrast ratio.

Both members of the WX800 series include built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi, plus four HDMI connections, including an HDMI-CEC interface that can be used to control other devices plus a component input. That connectivity allows them to access Toshiba's Enhanced NET TV services via the Yahoo Connected TV. Netflix, Blockbuster on Demand, and Pandora are also accessible.

The VX700 sets include 120-Hz technology and a 5 million:1 contrast ratio. According to Toshiba, however, the VX700 appears to perform true LED backlighting, while the higher-priced WX800 uses edge-lit LEDs. Toshiba said the two HDTVs also include Wi-Fi built in, with two USB ports, an SD/SDHC card slot, and support for DLNA technology. Netflix, VUDU, and Pandora were cited as available services.
