Samsung recently announced a new line of LED-backlit HDTVs which are the slimmest to date. They call these their new Luxia LED HDTV.  Nobody is going as far as Samsung currently in R&D and design innovation. The company is the only one thus far to announce a full lineup of edge-lit LED-based LCD TVs that offer the most advanced technology and design you can get.

The name “LED TV” sounds simple enough, but it’s important to remember that these one inch-thin TVs are actually normal LCD  TVs that use LEDs (light-emitting diodes) instead of the standard fluorescent backlights. These new LED TVs are somewhat different from some recent models like the Sony KDL-55XBR8 and Samsung LN46A950 which comes with local dimming technology with groups of LEDs behind the screen that can be dimmed or turned off to achieve deep, dark blacks. The 2009 Samsung LED TVs do not utilize local dimming, so they may not match the picture quality of the local dimming sets. Edge-lit LED-based displays are also 40 percent more energy-efficient than standard Energy Star-certified LCD sets.

Each model among the three series of Samsung’s “Luxia” lineup measures just 1.2 inches thick, thanks to that LED lighting system. The cheapest model, the 32-inch UN32A6000 ($1,599), will cost more than twice as much as Samsung’s standard 1080p 32-inch model LN32B530 ($749) does. The 46-inch UN46B6000 ($2,799) is more than $700 the equivalent standard 120Hz set, model LN46B650 ($2099).

The Luxia 7000, meanwhile, will have 4 HDMI ports, 120Hz refresh, USB 2.0 and Wireless DLNA streaming support, as well as using the Yahoo! Widget platform for video from YouTube, eBay auctions, news and photo sharing.  In the future, social media widgets and streaming TV shows and movies are planned.  Finally, the Luxia LED 8000 series has 240Hz refresh, together with Samsung’s AutoMotion blur-reduction, a new Touch of Color design with prism-light and chrome edging.
